It does not seem that long ago, I paid out big money to get a flashy website done which got heaps of rave reviews but generated few extra clients!
Roll on 2009 and in WordPress you have a customisable solution that’s a ready-made all-in-one:
Website, Blog, Lead Generator, Membership Site, Video + Audio etc – for FREE (and which constantly gets updated)!
Best the real value is when you understand the 3 levels of blogging:
(1) Rapid indexing of posts and ability to rank in the SE’s
(2) Content syndication – ease of getting your posts out elsewhere online
(3) Building community and credibility around your expertise through attracting comments and “a professional look”.
BUT it’s the shear range of plugins (and what they do) that make WP the premier choice.
It’s fast becoming the only tool you need to publish online for establishing an online presence and creating multiple streams of income.
The install is quick + easy and being open-source software, there are constant updates.
So if you know which plugins, theme and ping list to add … and that each post is just like any webpage in any static website;
you can make quantum leaps forward in getting known online.
Yes there is a learning curve which is why I recommend you start-out at wordpress.com first (if money is tight).
But the sooner you start on your own domain (wordpress.org), the sooner you start building a business asset with it’s own traffic, SE rankings, links in and fan base.

Hi,
I fully agree, but I would prefer to have an own webspace with own TLD. Generally, webspace is not that expensive anymore. Do you know what minimum size of webspace is required for Wordpress (2.8.x)?

Agreed – if it’s not on your own webspace, you are not building your own web property (asset). And I’ve never checked how much diskspace because as you say web hosting is so cheap nowadays. Plus it depends on how many plugins, video and audio uploads you add.
