When your subscriber first signs up for your list, they have certain expectations about what kind of content they’ll receive and how often they’ll receive it.
That’s because your landing page copy AND your first emails train prospects to expect something specific.
EXAMPLE: Your squeeze page and initial emails may promise a “content packed newsletter every week”
Indeed, this is exactly what you may deliver… for a while …
But if you switch to a series of non-stop product pitches, your subscriber is going to be upset because what’s appearing in his email is NOT what he signed up for.
Now, let me be clear: This isn’t just about whether your newsletters include commercial messages. It’s about expectations.
Let your readers know what to expect right from the start.
If you’re going to provide a mix of content and pitch in your newsletters, then your very FIRST newsletter should be a combination of content and pitch.
And every newsletter after that should do the same. That way your subscribers know what to expect and aren’t surprised.
The second thing you need to do on your squeeze page is focus on the benefits of receiving your newsletter.
Then secondarily you can let prospects know the benefits of the freebie you’re offering.
The reason is simple: If you focus on the freebie, then some people will join your list just to get the freebie.
They may give you a throwaway address or they may just unsubscribe immediately. Either way, they don’t care about your newsletter.
TIP: Indeed, if you don’t focus on the benefits of your newsletter at all, some of your “subscribers” may be surprised to get your newsletter.
And because they were focused on the freebie, they might wrongly assume your newsletter is spam!
The solution is simple: Treat your newsletter as your main “product” and offer a freebie as the bonus for joining (hardly anyone does this)
Better still offer a monthly “event” (teleclass or interview) that encourages them to want to stay within “your loop” (or miss out).
If you follow these simple tips, then your subscribers will know what to expect.
Bottom line: You will have a more responsive list!
