Allow me a few thoughts on goal-setting, a topical issue at this time of year.
Maybe it’s my Irish ancestry, and my maverick nature, but I’ve always hated to-do lists. They really are all about willpower and force.
"Struggle" as a means of self-improvement is largely over-rated in my opinion.
For me, instead of pushing I much prefer to be pulled. By that I mean I much prefer to be propelled by a compelling vision of the future.
For Triathlon, this spurred me on to train through those dark, freezing British winter days. The vision? – powering my way through the finish line at the world champs in sunny Perth, Australia.
I guess you could argue it’s classic the carrot vs the stick school of motivation. What’s it going to be for you?
But it’s also more than that. It’s a preferred lifeSTYLE and some people are driven towards creating "it" (whilst many clearly are not).
Have you identified your top goals this year? (and for your life?)
Tip: If you’re not sure what you really want, begin with a list of what you know that you don’t want and ask yourself "What would I rather have instead of this?"
Ask yourself any of these variations:
"If you could pursue only one goal this year, the successful achievement of which would make reaching all of your other goals more likely, what would that goal be?"
"What is the one thing you know to focus on which will make everything else in your life more likely to work out the way you most want it to?"
"What would be one thing you could be, do or have that would make success in every other of your life more likely and more fun?"
Take your time and allow your real goals to emerge. You’ll know you’ve got it when you feel a sense of clarity in relation to your original list.
You see I don’t think the developed world has an obesity problem as such; it’s a MINDSET issue.
Many people today simply do not have an inspiring vision of the future to pull them forwards.
And fortunately or unfortunately we become what we spend most of our time focusing on.
The key is to have a clear vision of what you’re trying to accomplish and work backwards to figure out the easiest way to get there. The simple law of a straight line.
I see so many people working harder at things that don’t bring them closer to their desires.
That is why a clear vision is so important, more so than a do-list of must-get goals.
