Digging For Extra Website Traffic

Now and again I use OnlyWire as a social bookmarking service which of course includes Digg.

I also have setup with iGoogle a number of tabs to keep track of my three key online interests: Fitness, Coaching + Online Marketing

Again I have a tab setup to review popular trends, using Digg as one indicator.

At the same time, many people say Digg is a waste of time and does not really drive (targeted) traffic. However, could it be they don’t really know how to get the best out of Digg?

With that in mind, I went about researching how best to use Digg and came up with a 21 point checklist, which I’m happy to share with you today.

In return, please let me know how it works out for you, or leave a comment and share you own personal experience with Digg.

Deal? Then let’s begin:
1. Participate daily with fellow Diggers.
2. Become an active part of the conversations by responding to user comments.
3. Get a feel for how and why certain stories become popular. Gain insight into how to make your own postings more popular.
4. Try to accumulate as many friends as you can (you can affect more people that way).
5. Make your profile look as thorough and as professional as possible.
6. Become friends especially with the power users (the COI’s on Digg).
7. Only submit content that is worth something. Make sure it is always interesting and relevant.
8. Get noticed by sending out shouts to others.
9. Just like any articles or information on your website, keywords are what get (and keep) peoples’ attention.
10. Only keep friends who provide feedback, who link to you and whom you can link to as well.
11. Use current events in relation to your business somehow.
12. Do not vote thumbs up on your own articles.
13. Use real numbers instead of written numbers.
14. Check the upcoming stories, link to other’s postings, and digg your way up to the top by recommending others and making as many friends as you can.
15. Be sure your content is a must see. Try to post things that have not been put up before. Make them intriguing and tantalizing.
16. Do not Digg every single thing you see, as you look less legitimate, and you’re giving certain people more credit than they possibly deserve.
17. Remind people to Digg your stuff from other sites, like your blogs and even your home page.
18. Submit a good amount of posts, but don’t overdo it.
19. Be sure to include a picture for a thumbnail. Choose something that will get peoples’ attention and that defines who you are.
20. The top 100 users on Digg control over half of the website’s content ranking. Pay close attention to what gets their attention.
21. Utilize the newest buzz on Digg to your advantage. Use the popular topics to give you fresh ideas.

Thanks for providing these tips. I use Digg all the time and usually get a surge to my websites on the days I post. I do know (first hand) that you have to be careful about posting to them frequently. They’ll delete your account in a heartbeat.

I look forward to implementing these tips.

Thanks for the feedback Scott. I do try to stop by Digg when I can, but mostly more to nose around as to what is proving popular. That’s why I did the r&d to see if I was missing something! Noel.
